As the big toe joint becomes more swollen and inflamed, the toe becomes stiff, which makes it difficult to bend or move the toe and interferes with walking, explains the AAOS. Infection Shoes rubbing against a bunion can cause blisters or open sores that can become infected. Foot infections are particularly dangerous in people with peripheral artery disease or diabetes, who often don’t feel pain because their nerves are damaged and don’t transmit pain sensations normally. Serious infection such as cellulitis can develop before an injury is noticed, the University of Michigan warns. Infection in the bone, called osteomylitis, can also develop. Surgery
This article reports the outcomes of bilateral corrective surgery for hallux valgus in a selected patient population. Materials and Methods Forty consecutive patients (80 feet) who presented to the outpatient surgery unit at our institution for surgical correction of bilateral hallux valgus were prospectively evaluated. Suitable patients were selected from those attending a specialist foot and ankle service with bilateral symptomatic hallux valgus. Patients underwent preoperative clinical scoring using the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) hallux assessment scoring system in addition to radiological assessment by dorsoplantar, oblique, and lateral weight-bearing radiographs of the feet (Figure 1). Preoperative pain scores were also recorded.
The last bunion treatment is surgery There are different types of surgical procedures that can be performed, and most require 6 to 8 full weeks of recovery. The surgeon may cut the tendon that is pulling the joint out of alignment, then shave off the part of the bone that is protruding. A scar remains with the surgery and the redness of a bunion may still be seen in some cases. In the photo here of one 65-year-old man who had bunion surgery, the amount of correction made still left him with bunions!
PREVALENCE — Many studies have tried to determine the prevalence of hallux valgus (HV) deformity. Approximately 4 to 44 percent of women and 2 to 22 percent of men have HV deformity, depending upon the method of measurement and the population studied 7-14. The prevalence is greater among shod compared with barefoot populations, although the condition is still found twice as often in women than men in non-shod populations 15-17. Proximal osteotomy appears to be more effective at correcting both the HA and IM angles but results in a shorter metatarsal and higher complication rates 43. Patient satisfaction with each procedure was 97 percent.

Bunions. Many people think that you get bunions from wearing ill-fitting shoes (which certainly does not help!), but bunions are actually a genetic deformity. A bunion forms when the bone or tissue at the base of your toe becomes enlarged. Sometimes the bone of the big toe angles towards the little toe (a deformity known as hallux valgus). In either case, bunions can lead to significant pain as well as difficulty walking. Use of over the counter items such as a toe spacer and bunion sleeve can be used for symptomatic treatment. However, these devices will not affect the size of the bunion or prevent progression or the deformity.
